Originally called Amegdoul, meaning "the well-built" or "fortified place" in Berber, and then Mogador by the Portuguese and Spaniards, this beautiful fishing town on the Atlantic Coast was finally renamed Essaouira in the 18th century. The city is full of charm and has a fascinating history and architecture that are worth discovering during a day trip from Marrakesh, located just over 100 miles east of Essaouira.

The "merchants of the king", from the ten most prestigious Jewish families in Morocco, knew about the city across Europe. These families enjoyed the prestige that they obtained from the missions for the Sultan, who was entrusted with Western powers. They actually held much of the trade and economy of the port, the latter providing 40% of all trade on the Atlantic coast between Timbuktu and Europe. The traded goods mostly consisted of ostrich feathers, gold dust, salt, ivory, slaves, etc.

Under the reign of Sultan Moulay Yazid, the Jewish community was relatively spared from persecution and settled in a new Jewish quarter from 1807. Unlike the former Mellah or Jewish quarter, the new one was located inside the medina in order to protect the Jews from possible abuses and helps maintain a high level of culture and education.

In the 19th century, the city started its decline, but it remained a major economical and military centre. Following the French invasion after 1844 and sacked the city by surrounding tribes, the Jews had to leave Essaouira to settle in Marrakech. However, they eventually returned later during difficult economic conditions.

When the Spanish attacked in 1860, the Jews took refuge again in the province of Haza and their plight drew the attention of Sir Moses Montefiore, who obtained the grant of new land to build a second Mellah. At that time, a strong community organisation could meet the needs of a population from 4,000 to up to 14,000 people. While the Jewish quarter was represented by a Sheikh in the political and civil affairs, its religious status was supported by a court of three rabbis.

The expenses of the community came from taxes on kosher meat, on imported products, and from various donations from international sources. Many religious schools, a yeshiva, and several English-French Jewish schools were founded in Essaouira in the 1800s. In the early 20th century, the Jewish population in Essaouira was still higher than the Muslim population, and urban life was regulated by the Jewish calendar. While in 1901 the Jewish community counted 19,000 people, the number went down to 5,000 at the beginning of the French Protectorate and continued to decline during the 1950s and 1960s.

Among the figures that shaped the history of the Jewish Community of Essaouira we could mention Rabbi Abraham Coriat, Abrahm Ibn Attar Messod Knafo, Rabbi Haim Pinto and the Corcos family.Today, there are few Jewish families living in Essaouira, and the Community Council has undertaken to restore the Attias and Pinto synagogues. Led by Andre Azoulay, adviser to the king, the city is experiencing a renaissance and is one of Morocco's main destinations for cultural tourism.

I have planned to take an east coast tour for a long time, but I have to make a lot of preparations ahead of time. Absolutely, I will not miss the classical Maid of The Mist tour, which can take me to sight see the grand waterfalls. I can imagine the roaring sounds and great power of nature. It must be a thrilling experience. Furthermore, I can take exciting tunnels tour to explore other exciting scenery of the waterfalls. The trip may be a little busy, but I can sight see as many places as possible in this 7-day-tour. I hope I can take an enjoyable tour in the coming vacation.

This article is devoted to casual photographers who want to see an immediate improvement in their photos without devoting too much time and effort to improving their skills. A few simple steps can make you a better photographer. I hope these tips help as you set off down the road or across the planet on your photography journey.

Get Closer

One thing I have noticed when looking at photographs taken by friends and family is that, often times, the subject of their photos are too far away. You will notice that your photo, whether it be a portrait or of an object, will be better if you are a little closer. This is especially true of portrait shots. So, when in doubt take a few steps closer or zoom in.

Natural Light is Better

Often times people forget, or don't bother to, turn their flash off. Many times you don't really need a flash. When taking photos of parties, indoor functions, or nighttime events, the natural, ambient light is washed away by the harsh light of a flash. The image that you pictured in your mind's eye is not the picture you end up taking when you use a flash. The subjects are unnaturally lit up while the background is darkened. So, when possible, turn that flash off. If you notice that your picture looks fuzzy or blurred, try increasing the sensitivity, or ISO (this represents how sensitive your camera's image sensor is to the amount of light present). More on this below.

See the Light

I've seen a lot of photographs of people where they are darkened/shadowed, and more often than not it's because the light or the sun is behind them. Have the subject look towards the light or sun, reposition yourself, and take the photo again. You will notice that the subject will no longer be shadowed. If you are unable to reposition, use a flash if you are outside (during the day). The flash will lighten the subject and balance the light.

Learn to Use Your Camera

No one particularly enjoys reading through camera manuals. However, learning the basic functions of your camera is important. Learning to manipulate your camera's settings will give you more freedom and improve your photographs. If nothing else, at least learn how to turn your flash on and off, and adjust the sensitivity (ISO). Regarding ISO, just remember that the darker the setting, the higher the ISO setting should be. For example, an ISO of 80 or 100 is ideal for outdoors during a sunny day, while an ISO of 800 to 1600 is better for indoors, or dark or night-time settings. You can manipulate the ISO on almost all digital cameras with just a couple of clicks. You don't need to go deep into your camera menus or settings to adjust this.

The Power of the Compact

Unless you are a professional photographer, you don't need a large camera with a detachable lense (SLRs). Compact cameras have come a long way over recent years and generally have a lot of functions, and take very good quality photos. Some even have 12-14x optical zooms, similar to traditional SLRs. Yes, most SLRs on average take better photos than compacts when comparing shot for shot, but most casual photographers will find the process of carrying a heavy camera that often needs its own bag, and the time it takes to get the camera out and prep for the shot, somewhat of an inconvenience. If you are thinking about traveling and want to take one versatile camera, buy a compact or subcompact. It will be easier to carry, so you will have it with you more often, and will therefore take more photographs.

A Note about Photography Software

The majority of the time you will probably not need to make any adjustments to the photos you take if you only intend to throw them in an album to show to your friends and family. There will occasionally be a picture where you will need to fix red eye, brighten or darken the image, increase contrast, etc. You can do almost all of this with the software that comes with your digital camera, so give it a shot with what you have first. But if you want to do some non-symmetric cropping or photo manipulation, buy a photo editing software. Same goes if you are serious about doing some really creative things, striving for perfection, or want to take your photography hobby to the next level. If this is the case, then you will be happy you made the investment. I use Adobe Photoshop Elements 5.0, but there are more current versions out there. But again, don't feel obligated to dive into a software purchase if you are a casual photographer. You will be wasting your money because the software will just sit on your shelf (or your hard drive).

What Is the Passport Renewal Fee?

If you already have a passport in your possession, you're going to find out that it isn't going to last forever. In fact, you're going to find out that you're going to have to renew your passport every 10 years. You will have to basically do the whole process again, where you will get your picture taken, as well as handed out a new book / passport.

Now, the same rules play in effect, when you get your passport. If you're under the age of 16, you will have to get a minor passport. For the War Veterans: The Les Invalides

L'Hotel National des Invalides, more commonly known as Les Invalides, is a prominent structural complex in Paris, France. It was originally built as a hospital and a retirement home for war veterans. At present, the complex buildings are best known for housing museums, chapels, monuments, and the tomb of none other than Napoleon I. The famous structure was first built as on 1670 both as hospital and a home for the sick and aged soldiers.

The structures

Les Invalides has fifteen courtyards, a chapel for the soldiers, a private royal chapel (Eglise du Rome or Dome des Invalides), an esplanade, and the museums de l'Armee,Musee des Plans-Relief, Musee de l'ordre de la Liberation and the Musee d'Histoire Contemponaire. Cour d'honneur (court of honor), being the largest courtyard in the complex, was for military parades. It was on 1679 that the chapel for the soldiers, Church Saint-Louis (Eglise Saint-Louis des Invalides), was built. Not long after, the Dome des Invalides was also built for sole use of the royal family.

The museums

The Musee de l'Armee was established after the merging of the Museum of Artillery and Historical Museum of the Army. The museum prides itself for its collection of weapons, uniforms and banners, armors and paintings and covers the military history from the middle ages to the early 20th century. Other museums are in Les Invalides are: the Musee des Plans-Reliefs and the Musee de l'ordre de la Liberation. The former contains detailed military maps and models of fortified cities and fortresses and the latter was created to recognize France's liberty and exhibits more than three thousand artifacts.

To this day, Les Invalides provides medical assistance to retired and disabled veterans through the Institution Nationale des Invalides.

Across from the Slave Lodge is the Groote Kirk (Great Church), which dates back to 1704. This is the mother church for the Dutch Reformed Church in South Africa.

Started Out as a Vegetable Patch

The Company's Garden's is a great place to take a break. This shady green area in the heart of Cape Town started out as a vegetable garden for the Dutch East India Company. Under Jan van Riebeeck and subsequent governors the garden was expanded and planted with exotic botanical specimens. Here you can see a statue of the South African statesman Cecil Rhodes. He brought in the North American squirrels whose descendants now scamper through the Gardens. After you leave the Gardens, pay a visit to St. George's Cathedral. This church dates back to 1834, and was for many years a bastion against apartheid.

The Bo-Kaap district is a largely Muslim neighbourhood, and home to many of Cape Town's non-white residents; that is, people of mixed race or Asian background. ARI ATOLL

Topographically, Ari Atoll diving differs from many others in the Maldives since it does not feature many long stretches of barrier reef. Instead, there are a lot of thilas here where submerged pinnacles both inside and outside the atoll lagoons act as sites of marine aggregation, making for wonderful diving both in and around the pinnacles and in the channels. Many divers consider the dive sites of the Ari Atoll to be the best in the Maldives and is featured prominently on the itineraries of many Maldivian live-aboards.

Major Points of Attraction

Sharks, manta rays and other pelagic fish are more commonly encountered around Ari Atoll and even the mighty whale shark regularly puts in appearances. Although there are spots elsewhere for sharks and mantas the most reliable sites for this ever popular passing trade are located here.

Maaya Thila - If not the premiere dive site in the Maldives, then one of the best. This pinnacle has a tumultuous assortment of sea life, with an amazing variety and volume of creatures. Brightly coloured nudibranchs vie for your attention with giant frogfish. Turtles can be seen happily munching on the reef, and the elusive guitar shark can be spotted by the alert diver.

Fish Head - Another Ari Atoll pinnacle, this one being a favourite for packs of grey reef sharks, that buzz past in search of food. Neverending trains of fusiliers and batfish often shoot past on the ocean highway, to further destinations at the atoll.

Hammerhead Point - This dive site is often visited by liveaboards early morning. Its proximity to deep waters lends the location the best chances of getting close to schooling hammerhead sharks.

NORTH MALE' ATOLL

North Male is one the best known and most explored areas of the Maldives, having long been recognised as providing a great variety of diving, beautiful scenery and close proximity to the international airport makes it a destination which is relatively easy to get to.

North Male diving is characterised by reefs, caves and drop offs. The atoll sees plenty of fish action and is generally a good area for large pelagics, with sharks and mantas at the front of the queue.

There are also some recent wrecks left by a few ships passing through the channels, already bustling with marine life. In addition, the North Male dive sites enjoy some of the best coral reefs in the Maldives and dive spots in this area are as healthy and bright as anywhere in the world.

Major Points of Attraction

Manta Point - Manta Point, which lies in the northern section of the channel leading out of the Ari Atoll, is - as the name suggests - an ideal place that's great for close encounters with Mantas Rays, not just for observing manta rays at close quarters, but also reef residents such as octopus, moray eels and white-tip reef sharks.. From December until the middle of April, the Mantas are regulars at this site, the topography and the location of the site making it an ideal habitat for all species of fish that live on plankton.

Girifushi Thila - A pinnacle covered in a riot of colourful soft corals, swept with currents that sweep in masses of schooling fish.

The origin of the legend begins with Cormac Laidir MacCarthy, the man who built the Blarney Castle. He got involved in a law case that he had to defend himself in court.
